Visually Challenged Woman Qualifies Judicial Service Exam, Set To Become Judge In Kerala

In a remarkable milestone for inclusivity in India’s judicial system, Thanya Nathan C., a visually-impaired advocate from Kerala, has successfully cleared the Kerala Judicial Service Examination 2025 for the post of Civil Judge (Junior Division). Her achievement is being widely hailed as an inspiring example of determination, accessibility, and equal opportunity within the legal profession.

Thanya, who is completely blind, secured the top position among candidates with benchmark disabilities. Her success underscores the gradual yet significant progress being made toward inclusivity in judicial services and professional institutions across the country.

Having enrolled as an advocate in August 2024, she began practising in Kannur under a senior lawyer while simultaneously preparing for the judicial examination. Notably, she relied largely on self-study for the preliminary and main examinations rather than formal coaching, demonstrating exceptional discipline and focus.

Despite lacking prior interview experience, she sought guidance from experienced legal professionals before the viva stage. She has emphasised that continuing court practice during preparation helped her maintain strong practical legal understanding, which proved beneficial during the examination process.

Speaking about challenges faced as a visually-impaired lawyer, Thanya highlighted practical barriers such as restrictions on the use of electronic devices inside courtrooms and limited implementation of paperless systems. These factors often required her to prepare Braille notes for arguments. She has advocated for wider adoption of accessible digital infrastructure in courts to enhance independence for lawyers with disabilities.

She also acknowledged positive developments in the judiciary, particularly the increasing use of voice-to-text technologies for recording evidence, which she described as a progressive step toward accessibility and equality.

Encouraging aspirants with disabilities, Thanya emphasised perseverance, self-confidence, and sustained effort. She credited her family, mentors, and senior colleagues for their continuous support throughout her journey.

Her achievement also aligns with the broader judicial trend recognising that physical disability alone cannot be a ground to deny opportunities in judicial services. Legal experts view her success as a significant step toward a more inclusive judiciary that reflects diversity in society.

साक्षात्कार का पूर्व अनुभव न होने के बावजूद उन्होंने वरिष्ठ विधि विशेषज्ञों से मार्गदर्शन लिया। उन्होंने यह भी बताया कि परीक्षा की तैयारी के दौरान नियमित न्यायालयीन प्रैक्टिस जारी रखने से उनके व्यावहारिक कानूनी ज्ञान को मजबूती मिली।

दृष्टिबाधित अधिवक्ता के रूप में चुनौतियों पर चर्चा करते हुए थान्या ने अदालतों में गैजेट उपयोग पर प्रतिबंध और पेपरलेस प्रणाली के सीमित क्रियान्वयन जैसी व्यावहारिक समस्याओं का उल्लेख किया। कई बार उन्हें बहस की तैयारी के लिए ब्रेल नोट्स का सहारा लेना पड़ा। उन्होंने न्यायालयों में सुलभ डिजिटल अवसंरचना बढ़ाने की आवश्यकता पर बल दिया।

उन्होंने न्यायपालिका में हो रहे सकारात्मक परिवर्तनों, विशेषकर साक्ष्य रिकॉर्डिंग में वॉयस-टू-टेक्स्ट तकनीक के उपयोग, को समावेशन की दिशा में महत्वपूर्ण कदम बताया।

दिव्यांग अभ्यर्थियों को संदेश देते हुए उन्होंने निरंतर प्रयास, आत्मविश्वास और धैर्य को सफलता की कुंजी बताया तथा अपने परिवार, मार्गदर्शकों और वरिष्ठ सहयोगियों के समर्थन को महत्वपूर्ण बताया।
