Punjab & Haryana High Court Judge Justice Mahabir Singh Sindhu Passes Away At 59

The legal fraternity on Sunday mourned the demise of Punjab and Haryana High Court Judge Justice Mahabir Singh Sindhu, who passed away at the age of 59 after a prolonged illness. According to an official communication issued by the High Court, Justice Sindhu breathed his last at 2:50 a.m. on June 28, 2026. Reports indicate that he had been undergoing treatment at Medanta Hospital, Gurugram, for the past several months.

In an official message expressing grief, the Punjab and Haryana High Court stated, "With profound grief and sorrow, it is informed that Hon'ble Mr. Justice Mahabir Singh Sindhu, Judge of this Court, left for his heavenly abode today, i.e. 28 June 2026, at 02.50 a.m." The High Court further informed that his cremation was scheduled to take place at 5:00 p.m. in his native village Masoodpur, Tehsil and District Hansi, Haryana.

Justice Mahabir Singh Sindhu was serving as the third senior-most Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court at the time of his demise and was due to retire on April 3, 2029. His untimely passing has been widely mourned by members of the Bench, the Bar and the legal community across the country.

Born on April 4, 1967, in an agriculturist family in Masoodpur village, Justice Sindhu was a first-generation lawyer. After completing his schooling in his native village, he obtained his LL.B. degree from Panjab University, Chandigarh, in 1992 and enrolled with the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana in the same year. He went on to build a distinguished practice before the Punjab and Haryana High Court, handling matters relating to civil, criminal, constitutional and service law. During his years at the Bar, he represented several government departments, statutory bodies, universities and public institutions.

His public law career included appointments as Additional Central Government Standing Counsel in 1999 and Additional Government Pleader for the Union Territory, Chandigarh in 2000. He later served as Deputy Advocate General, Haryana, Additional Advocate General, Punjab, and subsequently Additional Advocate General, Haryana, before resuming private practice in 2013. In 2016, he was empanelled to represent the Punjab and Haryana High Court and subordinate courts in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh.

Justice Sindhu was elevated as an Additional Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court on July 10, 2017, and was appointed as a Permanent Judge on December 3, 2018. During nearly nine years on the Bench, he delivered numerous judgments in matters involving constitutional law, criminal justice, service disputes, land acquisition, taxation and administrative law. He was known within the legal fraternity for his calm courtroom demeanour, meticulous preparation and balanced judicial approach.

Members of the Bar and several legal associations expressed condolences following the news of his demise, remembering him as a courteous judge and an accomplished lawyer whose judicial contributions earned widespread respect. Tributes also poured in from advocates and former colleagues, who described his journey from a rural background to the constitutional Bench as an inspiration for young lawyers entering the profession.

Justice Sindhu's demise leaves a significant void in the Punjab and Haryana High Court, where he continued to discharge judicial responsibilities until illness prevented him from attending court. His contributions to the administration of justice and to the development of law during his tenure on the Bench are expected to be remembered with deep respect by the legal fraternity.

पंजाब एवं हरियाणा हाईकोर्ट के न्यायाधीश न्यायमूर्ति महाबीर सिंह सिंधु का रविवार को 59 वर्ष की आयु में लंबी बीमारी के बाद निधन हो गया। हाईकोर्ट द्वारा जारी आधिकारिक सूचना के अनुसार उन्होंने 28 जून 2026 को प्रातः 2:50 बजे अंतिम सांस ली। विभिन्न समाचार रिपोर्टों के अनुसार वे पिछले कुछ महीनों से मेदांता अस्पताल, गुरुग्राम में उपचाराधीन थे।

पंजाब एवं हरियाणा हाईकोर्ट ने शोक संदेश जारी करते हुए कहा, "गहरे दुःख एवं शोक के साथ सूचित किया जाता है कि माननीय श्री न्यायमूर्ति महाबीर सिंह सिंधु आज, 28 जून 2026 को प्रातः 2:50 बजे अपने स्वर्गीय निवास के लिए प्रस्थान कर गए।" हाईकोर्ट ने बताया कि उनका अंतिम संस्कार उसी दिन शाम 5:00 बजे उनके पैतृक गांव मसूदपुर, तहसील एवं जिला हांसी, हरियाणा में किया जाना निर्धारित था।

निधन के समय न्यायमूर्ति महाबीर सिंह सिंधु पंजाब एवं हरियाणा हाईकोर्ट के तीसरे वरिष्ठतम न्यायाधीश थे और उनका सेवानिवृत्ति दिवस 3 अप्रैल 2029 निर्धारित था। उनके आकस्मिक निधन से न्यायपालिका, अधिवक्ता समुदाय तथा देशभर के विधि जगत में शोक की लहर है।

4 अप्रैल 1967 को हरियाणा के मसूदपुर गांव में एक कृषक परिवार में जन्मे न्यायमूर्ति सिंधु अपने परिवार के प्रथम पीढ़ी के अधिवक्ता थे। उन्होंने अपनी प्रारंभिक शिक्षा गांव में प्राप्त की और 1992 में पंजाब विश्वविद्यालय, चंडीगढ़ से एलएल.बी. की डिग्री हासिल करने के बाद उसी वर्ष बार काउंसिल ऑफ पंजाब एंड हरियाणा में अधिवक्ता के रूप में नामांकन कराया। इसके बाद उन्होंने पंजाब एवं हरियाणा हाईकोर्ट में दीवानी, आपराधिक, संवैधानिक तथा सेवा कानून से जुड़े मामलों में व्यापक प्रैक्टिस की और अनेक सरकारी विभागों, विश्वविद्यालयों तथा सार्वजनिक संस्थानों का प्रतिनिधित्व किया।

अपने विधिक करियर के दौरान उन्हें 1999 में अतिरिक्त केंद्रीय सरकार के स्थायी अधिवक्ता (Additional Central Government Standing Counsel) तथा 2000 में केंद्रशासित प्रदेश चंडीगढ़ के अतिरिक्त सरकारी अधिवक्ता के रूप में नियुक्त किया गया। इसके बाद उन्होंने हरियाणा के उप महाधिवक्ता, पंजाब के अतिरिक्त महाधिवक्ता तथा बाद में हरियाणा के अतिरिक्त महाधिवक्ता के रूप में भी सेवाएं दीं। 2013 में उन्होंने पुनः निजी वकालत प्रारंभ की और 2016 में पंजाब एवं हरियाणा हाईकोर्ट तथा अधीनस्थ न्यायालयों की ओर से अधिवक्ता पैनल में शामिल किए गए।

उन्हें 10 जुलाई 2017 को पंजाब एवं हरियाणा हाईकोर्ट का अतिरिक्त न्यायाधीश नियुक्त किया गया तथा 3 दिसंबर 2018 को स्थायी न्यायाधीश बनाया गया। लगभग नौ वर्षों के न्यायिक कार्यकाल में उन्होंने संवैधानिक कानून, आपराधिक न्याय, सेवा विवाद, भूमि अधिग्रहण, कराधान तथा प्रशासनिक कानून से जुड़े अनेक महत्वपूर्ण मामलों का निपटारा किया। विधि समुदाय में उन्हें शांत, विनम्र और संतुलित न्यायिक दृष्टिकोण के लिए विशेष सम्मान प्राप्त था।

उनके निधन पर अधिवक्ताओं, बार एसोसिएशनों तथा न्यायिक अधिकारियों ने गहरा शोक व्यक्त किया। अनेक वरिष्ठ अधिवक्ताओं ने उन्हें एक विनम्र न्यायाधीश, उत्कृष्ट अधिवक्ता और समर्पित न्यायिक अधिकारी के रूप में याद किया। ग्रामीण पृष्ठभूमि से निकलकर उच्च न्यायालय के न्यायाधीश बनने तक की उनकी यात्रा को युवा अधिवक्ताओं के लिए प्रेरणास्रोत बताया गया।

न्यायमूर्ति महाबीर सिंह सिंधु के निधन से पंजाब एवं हरियाणा हाईकोर्ट तथा भारतीय न्यायपालिका ने एक अनुभवी और सम्मानित न्यायाधीश को खो दिया है। विधि जगत उनके न्यायिक योगदान, निष्पक्षता और सार्वजनिक जीवन में निभाई गई भूमिका को लंबे समय तक स्मरण करेगा.
