Pan India Mediation Campaign “Mediation For the Nation” to Begin on July 1, 2025
Share:

New Delhi, June 28, 2025- In a major step towards promoting alternative dispute resolution, a 90-day long nationwide mediation campaign titled “Mediation For the Nation” is set to launch on July 1, 2025, and will continue until September 30, 2025. The campaign aims to expedite the resolution of pending cases across all levels of the judiciary, from Taluka Courts to High Courts, through mediation.

Conceptualized under the guidance of the Chief Justice of India and Justice Surya Kant, Judge of the Supreme Court and Executive Chairman of both the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) and the Mediation and Conciliation Project Committee (MCPC), the campaign is positioned as a people-centric initiative to promote mediation as an effective, economical, and relationship-preserving dispute resolution mechanism.

According to a joint press release issued by NALSA and MCPC, the campaign is designed to demonstrate that mediation is a speedy, cost-effective, and accessible method for resolving disputes especially important in a country grappling with a large backlog of cases.

  • Objective: To resolve suitable pending cases through mediation across courts in India and promote mediation awareness.

  • Duration: July 1 – September 30, 2025.

  • Case Types Covered:
Matrimonial disputes, motor accident claims, cheque bounce cases, domestic violence cases, service matters, commercial disputes, compoundable criminal offences, consumer complaints, partition suits, eviction matters, debt recovery, land acquisition disputes, and other civil cases suitable for settlement.

Operational Timeline:

  • From July 1 to July 31, 2025, courts will identify eligible cases and list them under the heading “For Referral to the Special Mediation Drive.”

  • Eligible cases will be referred to trained mediators after informing the parties.

  • Data on cases referred and settled will be collected and transmitted to MCPC on the following dates: August 4, 11, 18, 25 and September 1, 8, 15, and 22, 2025.

  • A final report will be compiled by October 6, 2025.

Mediation Modes and Support:

To ensure wider accessibility, mediation sessions will be conducted in physical, online, or hybrid modes. Sessions will take place seven days a week, depending on the convenience of the parties involved. Taluka and District Legal Services Authorities will support the organization of online mediation sessions. The campaign will involve all trained mediators, including those recently certified after completing the 40-hour training program. In complex cases, counsellors and subject-matter experts may assist mediators. Each High Court’s Mediation Monitoring Committee will oversee the execution of the campaign within its jurisdiction to ensure smooth coordination and reporting.

Academic Collaboration:

In a notable move to assess the impact and effectiveness of the campaign, the National Judicial Academy (NJA), Bhopal, in collaboration with selected National Law Universities (NLUs), will undertake a detailed study covering various aspects of the campaign.

This campaign reflects the judiciary’s strong commitment to embracing alternative dispute resolution as a tool to reduce pendency and ensure accessible justice. It reaffirms mediation not just as a legal tool, but as a public movement toward peacebuilding, efficiency, and systemic reform.
