Justice S.A. Dharmadhikari Sworn in as Chief Justice of Madras High Court

Justice Sushrut Arvind (S.A.) Dharmadhikari was sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court on March 6, 2026. The oath of office was administered by Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi during a formal ceremony held at the Raj Bhavan in Chennai.
Justice Dharmadhikari succeeds Justice Manindra Mohan Shrivastava, who retired from the position on March 5, 2026 after attaining the age of superannuation.
Appointment Following Collegium Recommendation
Justice Dharmadhikari’s elevation as Chief Justice came after the Supreme Court Collegium recommended his appointment on February 26, 2026. The Central Government subsequently approved the recommendation and issued the official notification earlier in the week.
Prior to his appointment as Chief Justice of the Madras High Court, Justice Dharmadhikari was serving as a judge of the Kerala High Court. His parent High Court is the Madhya Pradesh High Court, where he served for several years before being transferred to the Kerala High Court in April 2025.
Career at the Bar
Justice Dharmadhikari enrolled as an advocate in 1992 and practiced primarily before the Madhya Pradesh High Court. During his legal career, he handled matters involving civil, criminal and constitutional law.
Between 2000 and 2015, he served as Standing Counsel for the Union of India and represented several government bodies and public sector institutions including the Income Tax Department, Reserve Bank of India and Central Excise Department.
Elevation to the Bench
Justice Dharmadhikari began his judicial career when he was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court on April 7, 2016. He was later confirmed as a Permanent Judge on March 17, 2018.
In April 2025, he was transferred to the Kerala High Court, where he served as a judge until his elevation as Chief Justice of the Madras High Court.
Leadership of One of India’s Oldest High Courts
The Madras High Court, established in 1862, is one of the oldest High Courts in India and exercises jurisdiction over the State of Tamil Nadu and the Union Territory of Puducherry.
As Chief Justice, Justice Dharmadhikari is expected to oversee the administration of the court, case management reforms and strengthening of judicial infrastructure, while also addressing the challenge of case pendency.

जस्टिस सुश्रुत अरविंद (एस.ए.) धर्माधिकारी ने 6 मार्च 2026 को मद्रास हाईकोर्ट के मुख्य न्यायाधीश (Chief Justice) के रूप में शपथ ली।
उन्हें तमिलनाडु के राज्यपाल आर.एन. रवि ने चेन्नई के राजभवन में आयोजित एक समारोह में पद की शपथ दिलाई।
जस्टिस धर्माधिकारी ने जस्टिस मनिंद्र मोहन श्रीवास्तव का स्थान लिया है, जो 5 मार्च 2026 को सेवानिवृत्त हुए थे।
कॉलेजियम की सिफारिश के बाद नियुक्ति
जस्टिस धर्माधिकारी की नियुक्ति सुप्रीम कोर्ट कॉलेजियम द्वारा 26 फरवरी 2026 को की गई सिफारिश के बाद हुई। इसके बाद केंद्र सरकार ने इस सिफारिश को मंजूरी देते हुए उनकी नियुक्ति की अधिसूचना जारी की।
मद्रास हाईकोर्ट के मुख्य न्यायाधीश बनने से पहले जस्टिस धर्माधिकारी केरल हाईकोर्ट में न्यायाधीश के रूप में कार्यरत थे। उनका मूल उच्च न्यायालय मध्य प्रदेश हाईकोर्ट है।
वकालत का करियर
जस्टिस धर्माधिकारी ने 1992 में अधिवक्ता के रूप में नामांकन कराया और मुख्य रूप से मध्य प्रदेश हाईकोर्ट में वकालत की।
उन्होंने अपने करियर में सिविल, क्रिमिनल और संवैधानिक मामलों में व्यापक प्रैक्टिस की।
2000 से 2015 के बीच उन्होंने भारत सरकार के लिए स्टैंडिंग काउंसिल के रूप में भी कार्य किया। इस दौरान उन्होंने आयकर विभाग, रिजर्व बैंक ऑफ इंडिया और केंद्रीय उत्पाद शुल्क विभाग सहित कई सरकारी संस्थानों का प्रतिनिधित्व किया।
न्यायिक करियर
जस्टिस धर्माधिकारी को 7 अप्रैल 2016 को मध्य प्रदेश हाईकोर्ट का अतिरिक्त न्यायाधीश नियुक्त किया गया था।
इसके बाद 17 मार्च 2018 को उन्हें स्थायी न्यायाधीश बनाया गया।
अप्रैल 2025 में उनका स्थानांतरण केरल हाईकोर्ट में कर दिया गया, जहां उन्होंने मद्रास हाईकोर्ट के मुख्य न्यायाधीश के रूप में नियुक्ति तक कार्य किया।
ऐतिहासिक मद्रास हाईकोर्ट का नेतृत्व
मद्रास हाईकोर्ट, जिसकी स्थापना 1862 में हुई थी, भारत के सबसे पुराने उच्च न्यायालयों में से एक है और इसका अधिकार क्षेत्र तमिलनाडु और पुडुचेरी तक फैला हुआ है।
मुख्य न्यायाधीश के रूप में जस्टिस धर्माधिकारी से उम्मीद की जा रही है कि वे न्यायिक प्रशासन को मजबूत करने, मामलों के लंबित बोझ को कम करने और न्यायिक प्रणाली को अधिक प्रभावी बनाने की दिशा में काम करेंगे।
