Dharmendra Pradhan's resignation came after sustained protests led by students and youth organisations across several parts of the country. Demonstrators had been demanding his resignation, alleging that repeated examination irregularities—particularly the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak controversy—had severely damaged students' trust in India's competitive examination system.

In his public resignation statement, Pradhan said he had taken the decision keeping the interests of students foremost and to ensure that the ongoing protests did not become a source of further political or social instability. He also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for giving him the opportunity to serve as Education Minister.

President Accepts Resignation; Pralhad Joshi Gets Education Portfolio

According to an official communiqué issued by Rashtrapati Bhavan, the President accepted Pradhan's resignation under Article 75(2) of the Constitution of India.

The communiqué further stated that Pralhad Joshi has been entrusted with the Ministry of Education in addition to his present portfolios. Joshi will oversee the ministry until the government decides on a permanent appointment.

Additional Portfolios: Continues to serve as the Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, and New and Renewable Energy.
