Sonam Wangchuk Shifted to Hospital After 21-Day Hunger Strike; Delhi Police Cite Court Order and Medical Emergency

Prominent Ladakhi engineer, education reformer and environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk was shifted to VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi early on Saturday, July 18, after completing 21 days of an indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar. The move, carried out by the Delhi Police, came amid growing concerns over his deteriorating health and followed directions issued by the Delhi High Court requiring continuous medical monitoring and timely intervention if his condition worsened.

According to Delhi Police, Wangchuk was shifted to the hospital solely on medical grounds after doctors reported that his condition had become critical. Authorities stated that the action was taken pursuant to the Delhi High Court's order, which had emphasized that every effort should be made to protect Wangchuk's life while directing the administration to conduct regular clinical monitoring and provide medical treatment whenever necessary.

Hospital officials indicated that Wangchuk had developed serious electrolyte imbalance, including hypokalemia (dangerously low potassium levels), which can lead to life-threatening cardiac complications if untreated. Medical experts reportedly advised immediate hospitalization. Reuters reported that Wangchuk declined intravenous fluids and medication before being shifted to the hospital.

Supporters of Wangchuk alleged that he was removed from the protest site against his wishes, claiming that police arrived during the early hours and carried him away despite resistance from volunteers and supporters. Visuals from the protest site showed police and protesters engaging in heated arguments before Wangchuk was transported in an ambulance to Safdarjung Hospital.

The Delhi High Court had earlier heard a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) expressing concern over Wangchuk's rapidly deteriorating health. Without directing forcible feeding, the Division Bench headed by Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia observed that "the life of every citizen is precious" and directed the authorities to maintain regular health monitoring, provide timely medical assistance and take necessary measures whenever medical intervention became essential. The Court's order focused exclusively on preserving life and ensuring appropriate healthcare.

Medical bulletins released over the past week had consistently reported significant weight loss and increasing physical weakness. According to reports, Wangchuk had lost approximately nine kilograms since beginning his fast, although he repeatedly stated that he would continue the protest until meaningful action was taken on the demands raised by the movement.

The present agitation differs from Wangchuk's earlier campaigns relating to Ladakh's constitutional safeguards, Sixth Schedule status, environmental protection and democratic representation. The current protest is centred on alleged irregularities in national competitive examinations and demands for systemic reforms and political accountability. Although Wangchuk remains widely identified with Ladakh's environmental and constitutional causes, this hunger strike has expanded his campaign to broader issues concerning education governance and examination integrity.

As of the latest official information available on July 18, 2026, Sonam Wangchuk remains under medical supervision at Safdarjung Hospital. There has been no official announcement from either the Delhi Police, hospital authorities or the Central Government indicating that his protest has formally ended. प्रख्यात लद्दाखी इंजीनियर, शिक्षा सुधारक एवं पर्यावरण कार्यकर्ता सोनम वांगचुक को 21 दिन की अनिश्चितकालीन भूख हड़ताल के बाद शनिवार तड़के नई दिल्ली स्थित VMMC एवं सफदरजंग अस्पताल में भर्ती कराया गया। उन्हें दिल्ली पुलिस ने जंतर-मंतर स्थित धरनास्थल से हटाया। पुलिस का कहना है कि यह कार्रवाई उनकी लगातार बिगड़ती स्वास्थ्य स्थिति तथा दिल्ली हाईकोर्ट के निर्देशों के अनुपालन में की गई, जिसमें प्रशासन को नियमित चिकित्सकीय निगरानी और आवश्यकता पड़ने पर तत्काल उपचार सुनिश्चित करने को कहा गया था।

यह घटनाक्रम देशभर में चर्चा का विषय बने आंदोलन के बीच सामने आया है। सोनम वांगचुक 28 जून 2026 से अनिश्चितकालीन उपवास पर थे। उन्होंने कथित राष्ट्रीय परीक्षा प्रश्नपत्र लीक विवाद, विशेषकर NEET-UG से जुड़े मुद्दों पर जवाबदेही तय करने तथा केंद्रीय शिक्षा मंत्री धर्मेंद्र प्रधान के इस्तीफे की मांग का समर्थन करते हुए यह भूख हड़ताल शुरू की थी।

अस्पताल से जुड़े सूत्रों के अनुसार वांगचुक के शरीर में पोटैशियम का स्तर अत्यधिक कम (Hypokalemia) हो गया था, जिससे हृदय संबंधी गंभीर जटिलताएं उत्पन्न होने का खतरा था। Reuters की रिपोर्ट के अनुसार अस्पताल ले जाए जाने से पहले उन्होंने अंतःशिरा द्रव (IV Fluids) और दवाएं लेने से भी इनकार किया था।

दूसरी ओर, वांगचुक के समर्थकों ने आरोप लगाया कि उन्हें उनकी इच्छा के विरुद्ध धरनास्थल से हटाया गया। समर्थकों का कहना है कि पुलिस सुबह-सुबह पहुंची और विरोध के बावजूद उन्हें एंबुलेंस के माध्यम से अस्पताल ले गई। घटनास्थल पर पुलिस और प्रदर्शनकारियों के बीच तीखी नोकझोंक भी देखने को मिली।

पुलिस का कहना है कि यह कदम केवल जीवन बचाने के उद्देश्य से उठाया गया, जबकि प्रदर्शनकारियों ने इसे शांतिपूर्ण आंदोलन को कमजोर करने का प्रयास बताया। वांगचुक को अस्पताल ले जाने के बाद भी जंतर-मंतर पर प्रदर्शन जारी रहा और आंदोलन को आगे बढ़ाने की घोषणा की गई।

रिपोर्टों के अनुसार Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) के संस्थापक अभिजीत दिपके ने घोषणा की है कि वे वांगचुक की अनुपस्थिति में भूख हड़ताल जारी रखेंगे। आंदोलनकारियों ने संसद के मानसून सत्र के दौरान संसद तक मार्च निकालने की अपनी योजना भी दोहराई है और परीक्षा प्रणाली में सुधार तथा कथित पेपर लीक मामले में जवाबदेही तय करने की मांग दोहराई है।

इससे पहले दिल्ली हाईकोर्ट ने वांगचुक की बिगड़ती स्वास्थ्य स्थिति को लेकर दायर जनहित याचिका (PIL) पर सुनवाई की थी। मुख्य न्यायाधीश देवेंद्र कुमार उपाध्याय और न्यायमूर्ति तेजस करिया की पीठ ने कहा था कि "हर नागरिक का जीवन बहुमूल्य है" तथा प्रशासन को नियमित चिकित्सकीय निगरानी, समय पर उपचार और आवश्यकता पड़ने पर आवश्यक चिकित्सा उपलब्ध करानी चाहिए। अदालत ने अपने आदेश में मुख्य रूप से जीवन की सुरक्षा पर बल दिया था।

पिछले कई दिनों से जारी स्वास्थ्य बुलेटिनों में वांगचुक का वजन लगातार घटने और उनकी शारीरिक कमजोरी बढ़ने की जानकारी दी गई थी। विभिन्न रिपोर्टों के अनुसार उन्होंने भूख हड़ताल शुरू करने के बाद लगभग 9 किलोग्राम वजन खो दिया था। इसके बावजूद उन्होंने सार्वजनिक रूप से कहा था कि जब तक उनकी मांगों पर सार्थक कार्रवाई नहीं होती, वे अपना उपवास समाप्त नहीं करेंगे।

यह आंदोलन वांगचुक के पहले के लद्दाख को छठी अनुसूची का दर्जा, पर्यावरण संरक्षण और संवैधानिक अधिकारों से जुड़े अभियानों से अलग है। वर्तमान आंदोलन मुख्य रूप से राष्ट्रीय स्तर की परीक्षाओं में कथित अनियमितताओं, परीक्षा प्रणाली में सुधार और राजनीतिक जवाबदेही की मांग पर केंद्रित है।

18 जुलाई 2026 तक उपलब्ध आधिकारिक जानकारी के अनुसार सोनम वांगचुक सफदरजंग अस्पताल में चिकित्सकीय निगरानी में हैं। अभी तक न तो दिल्ली पुलिस, न अस्पताल प्रशासन और न ही केंद्र सरकार की ओर से यह आधिकारिक घोषणा की गई है कि उनका आंदोलन समाप्त हो गया है। इसी प्रकार आंदोलनकारियों की मांगों पर भी अभी तक कोई आधिकारिक निर्णय घोषित नहीं किया गया है।
