Delhi High Court hears plea flagging “Khoon Ki Holi on Eid” threats after Uttam Nagar murder
Share:

The Delhi High Court has taken note of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) raising alarm over communal tension and threats of violence in Uttam Nagar, Delhi, following a recent murder incident during Holi.

The plea highlighted disturbing slogans and threats such as “Khoon ki Holi Eid pe khelenge”, allegedly circulating in the locality and on social media, creating fear among residents ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr.

Background: Murder during Holi triggers tensions

The case stems from a violent clash during Holi celebrations in Uttam Nagar, where a 26-year-old man (Tarun Kumar) was allegedly beaten to death following a neighbourhood dispute.

According to reports:

  • The incident began after a minor altercation involving a water balloon
  • It escalated into a mob assault, resulting in the victim’s death
  • Several persons have been arrested in connection with the case

Following the incident, tensions escalated in the area, with communal narratives and threats emerging, particularly targeting the upcoming Eid celebrations.

What the plea before the High Court stated

The petition was filed by the Association for Protection of Civil Rights (APCR) and mentioned before a Bench led by Chief Justice D.K. Upadhyaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela / Tejas Karia (as per listings).

The plea alleged:

  • Open threats of violence against a particular community
  • Circulation of hate speech and inflammatory slogans like
👉 “Khoon ki Holi Eid pe khelenge”
  • Risk of imminent communal violence during Eid
  • Instances of shops being shut, fear among residents, and displacement

It sought urgent directions to authorities to:

  • Prevent violence and hate speech
  • Ensure safety of residents
  • Maintain law and order during Eid

Delhi High Court’s response

Taking the matter seriously, the High Court:

  • Agreed to hear the plea urgently
  • Directed authorities to ensure peaceful and secure conditions
  • Emphasised that law enforcement must act proactively to prevent any untoward incident

The Court also warned that:

  • Authorities must ensure that no section of society creates disturbance
  • Adequate police deployment and vigilance should be maintained

Police action and security measures

Authorities informed the Court that:

  • Heavy police deployment and patrolling have been initiated
  • Monitoring of social media content is underway
  • Several inflammatory posts have been removed
  • Additional forces have been deployed to prevent escalation

Security arrangements are expected to continue through Eid and beyond (till Ram Navami) to ensure stability.

Significance of the case

This case highlights critical issues of:

  • Communal harmony and law enforcement responsibility
  • Role of courts in preventive intervention during potential unrest
  • Increasing importance of monitoring hate speech and digital incitement

The High Court’s intervention underscores that preventive policing and timely judicial oversight are essential to avoid escalation of communal tensions.

Association for Protection of Civil Rights (APCR)
