WEST BENGAL LEGAL OFFICER SYLLABUS

  • Examination will be held in two successive parts, viz.

1) written Examination &
2) Personality Test

Age Limit:-

  • General category: – Not less than 23 years and not more than 36 years.
  • SC/ST candidates – Upper age limit is relaxable by 5 years.
  • BC (Non-creamy layer)- Upper age limit is relaxable by 3years.
  • Persons with disability having – Up to 45 years of age.
  • Disability of 40% and above as Per Govt.Rules

Note:

Upper Age limit is also relaxable for the candidates serving under Govt. Of West Bengal SC, ST, and BC candidates of other states may apply for unreserved vacancies as General Candidates.

Written Examination

Written examination – The written examination shall consist of the following 9 papers, each paper carrying 100 marks

Paper I
1) English Composition, essay, precis writing – 50 marks
2) Composition and essay writing in Bengali/Hindi/Urdu/Nepali/Santhali and translation from English to Bengali/Hindi – 50 marks

Note: There shall be separate answer – scripts for (a) and (b)

Paper-II
1) General Knowledge – 50 marks
2) Current Affairs – 50 marks


Paper-III
1) Constitutional Law of India – 50 marks
2) Constitution Of India – 50 marks
Paper-IV Administrative Law – 100 marks


Paper-V
1) Interpretation of Statues and Principles of Legislation And legislative drafting – 80 marks
2) The General Clauses Act,1897 (10 of 1897) And the Bengal General Clauses Act,1899 (Ben Act I
of 1899) – 20 marks


Paper-VI

 100 marks
1) The West Bengal Estates Acquisition Act,1953 (West Ben. Act I of 1954) – Chapters I, II and VII
2) The West Bengal Land Reforms Act,195 (West Ben. Act X of 1956)- Chapters I, II, IIA, IIB, III & IX
3) The land Acquisition Act,1894 (1 of 1894)
4) The Public Premises (Eviction of unauthorised Occupants Act,1971 (40 of 1971) The
Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 (29 of 1986)


Paper-VII
100 marks
1) The Civil procedure Code,1908 (5 of 1908) (Sections Only);
2) Civil rules and Orders (Chapter 1,2,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,18,19,20,24, 25,27,28 and 29)
3) Criminal Rules and Orders (Chapter I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, X, XI, XII, XIII, XIV, XVI, XVII and XVIII

Paper-VIII

1) The Criminal Procedure Code, 1973 (2 of 1974) (Chapters I, II, III, IV, V, VIII, IX, X, XII, XIII, XIV,
XV, XVI, XVII, XVIII, XIX, XX, XXIII, XXVII, XXIX, XXX, XXXI, XXXIV, XXXV, XXXVI
2) High Court Original Side Rules and Orders
3) High Court Appellate Side Rules and Orders.

Paper-IX
1) The Evidence Act, 1872 (1 of 1872)
2) The Indian Penal Code,1860 (45 of 1860)

Note:

  • The Public service Commission, West Bengal shall have the discretion to fix qualify marks
    in the aggregate.

  • The Standard of examination in the Law papers (compulsory and optional) will be that of
    the LLB Degree of the Calcutta University.
  •  All answers must be written either in English or in the Bengali Except in Paper 1.

INTERVIEW – {100 marks}

Personality Test, Academic knowledge, Communication skills etc.

Personality test- [100 marks]

The personality test will be of 100 marks. For this purpose, a limited no. Of candidates, selected in order of merit on the results of the written examination will be called. Final merit list will be prepared on the basis of the total marks obtained in all the written papers and in the personality Test.

Qualification:

  • A citizen of India or such a person of other nationality as declared by Government of India.
  •  A degree in Law from a recognised University.
  • Ability To read, write and speak in Bengali (not required for those whose mother tongue is Nepali Vide Finance Dept. Notification No. 1243- F(P) dt. 02.03.2016)
