Supreme Court Grants Protection to Minor Girl Forced Into Child Marriage to Settle Debts
Share:

In a landmark move, the Supreme Court of India has granted police protection to a 16-year-old minor girl from Bihar and her friend after she fled a forced child marriage. The girl, who was reportedly married off to a 33-year-old contractor, Jai Shankar, as a means to repay her parents’ debts, alleged physical abuse and sought annulment of the marriage under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006.

Without parental support, the minor approached the apex court through a petition filed under Article 32 of the Constitution, seeking immediate protection. The case has taken a complex turn, as the girl’s friend — who aided her escape — now faces kidnapping charges.

A bench comprising Justice Ujjal Bhuyan and Justice Manmohan directed the Delhi Police Commissioner and Bihar DGP to ensure the safety of both the girl and her friend. The Court also instructed the authorities to maintain regular contact with them and submit a sealed status report before the next hearing scheduled on July 15, 2025.

This development has brought renewed attention to the persistent issue of child marriage and the exploitation of minors under economic distress. The Supreme Court’s proactive intervention reaffirms its commitment to safeguarding children’s rights under constitutional protections.
