Mumbai Court Restrains Carry Minati, Others From Posting Allegedly Defamatory Content Against Karan Johar
Share:

In a notable development concerning online content regulation and defamation law, a Mumbai civil court has passed an ad-interim injunction restraining popular YouTuber Ajey Nagar (CarryMinati) and others from posting or circulating defamatory, objectionable, or abusive content against filmmaker Karan Johar. The order was issued after Johar filed a defamation suit objecting to a roast-style video uploaded on the YouTuber’s channel.

The allegedly offending video — said to parody Johar’s talk show “Koffee With Karan” — reportedly contained vulgar and abusive remarks directed at the filmmaker, prompting the legal action. The court found a prima facie case of defamation and directed immediate removal of such content from digital platforms.

Presiding Judge Pandurang Bhosale observed that the impugned material appeared defamatory at first glance and therefore warranted interim protection. The court also issued “John Doe” directions to restrain unknown persons from circulating or reposting the disputed content across social media platforms.

In addition, Meta Platforms and other digital intermediaries were asked to assist in removing the videos and related URLs. The court emphasised that digital content capable of harming reputation must be addressed swiftly to prevent further circulation.

The defendants reportedly argued that the videos had already been deleted and raised jurisdictional objections. However, the court granted interim relief pending detailed consideration of the suit.

Legal experts say the order highlights evolving judicial scrutiny over online defamation, influencer responsibility, and digital platform accountability. The case may contribute to future jurisprudence on balancing freedom of expression with reputation rights in the age of social media.
