A sessions court in Kolkata has convicted Sanjoy Roy as the principal accused in the RG Kar rape-murder case, declaring him guilty of raping and murdering a trainee doctor. The sentencing hearing is scheduled for Monday.

During the trial, Roy denied involvement and maintained his innocence. However, forensic evidence indicated Roy's presence at the scene, with DNA evidence linking him to the crime. The court relied on these reports to conclude his culpability.

Sessions Judge Anirban Das remarked that the maximum penalty for Roy could be death, while the minimum sentence is life imprisonment.

Background:

The case concerns the gruesome rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in August 2024. The incident created widespread outrage across the country, prompting the High Court to transfer the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Following this, the CBI filed a chargesheet in the sessions court.

The matter also reached the Supreme Court, which took suo moto cognizance to develop guidelines ensuring workplace safety for doctors and monitoring such investigations.

Various cases were brought before the Calcutta High Court, which later transferred the inquiry into alleged misconduct and corruption by the former principal, Sandip Ghosh, to the CBI.

Additionally, cases were filed against the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the jurisdictional police station, accusing them of misclassifying the case as an 'unnatural death' and implying potential suicide, allegedly in connivance with the former principal. However, due to delays in the chargesheet filing by the CBI against the principal and the OC, both were granted bail.

Ultimately, Sanjoy Roy remains the sole accused in the case, as the chargesheet filed by the CBI names him as the primary perpetrator.
