Earthquake in Delhi Triggers Concerns Over City’s Seismic Vulnerability
Share:

A magnitude 4.0 earthquake struck Delhi early this morning, causing widespread panic as tremors were felt across north India. The quake, which hit at 5:36 AM at a depth of about 5 km, originated near Dhaula Kuan, close to Durgabhai Deshmukh College of Special Education. Residents of high-rise buildings in Noida and Ghaziabad were forced to evacuate, as they experienced shaking buildings and unsettling tremors. Some passengers at the railway station even reported feeling like a train was running underground.

Earthquake Impact and Intensity:

The quake was categorized as a moderate intensity earthquake. While it caused some panic, it did not result in major damage to structures, which is typical for quakes of 4.0 magnitude. Earthquakes in the 2.5-5.4 magnitude range generally don't cause damage but can be felt by residents. For larger quakes, like those above 5.5 magnitude, damage to buildings can occur.

Delhi’s Seismic Risk and Preparedness:

Delhi is located in Seismic Zone IV, indicating a higher risk of earthquakes. Earthquakes of varying magnitudes have occurred in the region in the past, with five earthquakes above 5.5 magnitude since 1720. The region’s seismicity is attributed to the collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, and the city's vulnerability is further exacerbated by the Delhi-Hardwar Ridge, an important geological structure.

City’s Vulnerability and Disaster Preparedness:

Despite no major casualties from today’s earthquake, the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) has raised concerns over the city’s readiness for a large-scale earthquake disaster. The Vulnerability Atlas of India highlights that 6.5% of houses in Delhi face a high damage risk in the event of an earthquake, while 85% are at moderate risk. The high population density, non-resilient buildings, and unplanned urban development in Delhi increase the threat of significant economic and political consequences in the event of a large earthquake.

Recommendations and Legal Considerations:

Experts, including seismologists and authorities from the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), have stressed the need for better earthquake-resilient infrastructure. The DDMA has advised residents to stay informed and prepared for potential aftershocks, and the city must prioritize earthquake-resistant construction laws and regulations. With the city’s vulnerability to seismic activity, further studies and enhanced disaster mitigation plans are crucial to ensuring the safety of Delhi’s residents in the face of future earthquakes.

Conclusion:

This recent earthquake serves as a stark reminder of Delhi’s seismic vulnerability and the urgent need for comprehensive disaster preparedness. As the city continues to experience tremors, lawmakers and authorities must reassess building codes, urban planning policies, and emergency response strategies to mitigate risks associated with potential earthquakes in the future.
