Supreme Court Integrates AI and ML Tools for Case Management, But Not for Decision-Making
Share:

The Supreme Court of India is integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) tools to streamline case management, but it has clarified that these technologies will not be used for decision-making or delivering judgments. Union Minister of Law and Justice, Arjun Ram Meghwal, confirmed this in a recent Parliamentary response.

Key points from the response include:

  1. AI-Assisted Transcription: The Supreme Court is using AI tools to transcribe oral arguments during Constitution Bench hearings. These transcriptions are accessible on the Supreme Court’s website, with plans to extend this to regular hearing days (Thursdays).

  2. Multilingual Translation: AI is also being used to translate judgments into 18 Indian languages, including Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu, improving accessibility for a wider population.

  3. SUPACE (Supreme Court Portal for Assistance in Court Efficiency): This AI-based tool is designed to analyze case facts and identify relevant precedents. It is currently in the experimental phase, awaiting the procurement of advanced hardware for further deployment.

  4. Defect Identification in Legal Filings: The Supreme Court’s Registry is testing AI and ML tools to identify defects in legal filings, with feedback from 200 Advocates-on-Record. This initiative, in collaboration with IIT Madras, aims to enhance administrative efficiency.

However, the Law Minister clarified that there are no plans to integrate AI-based legal research or case prediction systems into the court's decision-making process.

This move is part of an effort to improve the efficiency of legal proceedings and make judicial processes more accessible to the public.
