A court in Barasat, North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, on Monday remanded three accused arrested in connection with the murder of Chandranath Rath, close aide and former personal assistant of West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, to 13 days of police custody. The order was passed to enable further investigation into what police described as a highly planned and professional assassination.

The accused have been identified as:

• Mayank Raj Mishra,
• Vicky Maurya,
• and Raj Singh.

They were arrested by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh and were produced before the Barasat court amid heavy security arrangements.

The court directed that all three accused remain in police custody till May 24, 2026, after investigators argued that custodial interrogation was necessary to uncover the “larger conspiracy” behind the killing and identify other persons involved in the crime.

According to the prosecution, the murder of Chandranath Rath was not an ordinary criminal act but appeared to be a carefully executed targeted attack carried out with professional precision. Investigators informed the court that multiple teams are probing possible interstate links, financial transactions, and the role of alleged local masterminds behind the assassination.

Police told the court that the accused persons were tracked through:

• CCTV footage,
• digital surveillance,
• and alleged UPI payment trails generated during their movement after the crime.

The SIT reportedly argued before the court that the accused needed to be questioned further regarding:

• procurement of firearms,
• escape routes,
• logistics planning,
• and identity of persons who allegedly hired them to execute the attack.

Chandranath Rath, a former Indian Air Force airman and long-time political aide of Suvendu Adhikari, was shot dead near his residence in Madhyamgram on the night of May 6, 2026. The murder occurred shortly after the West Bengal Assembly election results and triggered massive political controversy across the State.

According to investigation details that have emerged so far, Rath was returning home when his vehicle was allegedly intercepted by armed assailants who opened fire at close range. Investigators suspect the attack lasted less than a minute and was executed with military-style coordination.

Forensic teams recovered multiple bullet casings from the crime scene, and early reports suggested that sophisticated firearms may have been used in the killing. Authorities are also investigating whether fake vehicle registration numbers were used during the operation to conceal identities.

The killing sparked sharp political reactions in West Bengal. BJP leaders described the incident as a “targeted assassination” and demanded strict action against all those involved. Suvendu Adhikari had earlier appealed for peace while assuring that the killers would be brought to justice.

Following the murder, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) took over the probe amid increasing political sensitivity surrounding the case. Authorities stated that the investigation was being expanded across multiple states due to suspected interstate involvement of hired shooters.

Reports indicate that investigators suspect the attack may have been carried out by trained sharpshooters allegedly hired from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Police are now examining:

The case continues to attract national attention because of Chandranath Rath’s close association with Suvendu Adhikari, who recently became the Chief Minister of West Bengal following the Assembly elections.

Investigators are expected to continue interrogating the accused over the coming days while simultaneously attempting to identify:

पश्चिम बंगाल के उत्तर 24 परगना जिले की बारासात अदालत ने सोमवार को पश्चिम बंगाल के मुख्यमंत्री सुवेंदु अधिकारी के करीबी सहयोगी और पूर्व निजी सहायक Chandranath Rath की हत्या के मामले में गिरफ्तार तीन आरोपियों को 13 दिन की पुलिस हिरासत में भेज दिया। अदालत ने यह आदेश मामले की आगे की जांच और कथित बड़ी साजिश का खुलासा करने के लिए दिया।

गिरफ्तार आरोपियों की पहचान:

• Mayank Raj Mishra,
• Vicky Maurya,
• और Raj Singh

पुलिस के अनुसार आरोपियों तक पहुंचने में:

Chandranath Rath, जो भारतीय वायुसेना के पूर्व कर्मी और सुवेंदु अधिकारी के लंबे समय से करीबी सहयोगी थे, की 6 मई 2026 की रात मध्यग्राम स्थित उनके घर के पास गोली मारकर हत्या कर दी गई थी। यह घटना पश्चिम बंगाल विधानसभा चुनाव परिणाम आने के तुरंत बाद हुई थी और इसने राज्य में बड़ा राजनीतिक विवाद खड़ा कर दिया।

जांच के अनुसार Rath अपने घर लौट रहे थे, तभी हमलावरों ने उनकी गाड़ी को रोककर नजदीक से फायरिंग की। पुलिस को शक है कि पूरा हमला एक मिनट से भी कम समय में बेहद पेशेवर तरीके से अंजाम दिया गया।

फॉरेंसिक टीमों ने घटनास्थल से कई गोलियों के खोखे बरामद किए। शुरुआती जांच में यह भी संकेत मिले कि हमले में अत्याधुनिक हथियारों का इस्तेमाल किया गया हो सकता है। पुलिस यह भी जांच कर रही है कि क्या हमले में इस्तेमाल वाहनों पर फर्जी नंबर प्लेट लगी थीं।

इस हत्या के बाद पश्चिम बंगाल में राजनीतिक प्रतिक्रियाएं तेज हो गईं। BJP नेताओं ने इसे “targeted assassination” बताते हुए दोषियों के खिलाफ कड़ी कार्रवाई की मांग की। सुवेंदु अधिकारी ने भी पहले शांति बनाए रखने की अपील करते हुए कहा था कि हत्यारों को बख्शा नहीं जाएगा।

हत्या के बाद मामले की जांच Criminal Investigation Department (CID) को सौंप दी गई। अधिकारियों ने बताया कि जांच कई राज्यों तक फैलाई गई है क्योंकि इस मामले में कथित तौर पर बाहरी राज्यों से आए शार्पशूटर्स के शामिल होने का संदेह है।

रिपोर्ट्स के अनुसार जांच एजेंसियों को शक है कि यह हमला उत्तर प्रदेश और बिहार से बुलाए गए पेशेवर शूटरों द्वारा अंजाम दिया गया। पुलिस:

सुनवाई के दौरान आरोपियों के वकीलों ने लंबी पुलिस हिरासत का विरोध किया और आरोपों को बढ़ा-चढ़ाकर पेश किए जाने की बात कही। हालांकि अभियोजन पक्ष ने कहा कि मामले के कई महत्वपूर्ण पहलुओं की जांच अभी बाकी है और आगे पूछताछ आवश्यक है।

बारासात अदालत ने मामले की गंभीरता को देखते हुए अभियोजन पक्ष की दलीलों को स्वीकार किया और तीनों आरोपियों को 13 दिन की पुलिस हिरासत में भेज दिया।

यह मामला इसलिए भी राष्ट्रीय स्तर पर चर्चा में है क्योंकि Chandranath Rath पश्चिम बंगाल के नए मुख्यमंत्री बने सुवेंदु अधिकारी के बेहद करीबी माने जाते थे।

आने वाले दिनों में जांच एजेंसियां आरोपियों से पूछताछ जारी रखेंगी और कथित तौर पर हत्या की साजिश में शामिल:
