AAP Accuses Haryana BJP Government of Water Poisoning, BJP Denies Allegations

Amid the buildup to the Delhi assembly elections, a political storm has erupted after the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) accused the BJP-led Haryana government of poisoning the Yamuna river, which provides water to the national capital. The allegations have sparked sharp political exchanges between the ruling party in Delhi and the opposition, with both sides offering starkly different views.

AAP's Allegations: Water Terrorism and Risk to Public Health

Arvind Kejriwal, AAP's supremo and Delhi Chief Minister, led the charge, accusing the Haryana government of releasing toxic water through the Yamuna river, which he claims could have caused a catastrophe in Delhi, potentially resulting in deaths. He further alleged that the BJP was indulging in such acts to blame the Delhi government in the event of any harm or fatalities.

Kejriwal emphasized the role of Delhi Jal Board (DJB) engineers, who, according to him, prevented the toxic water from entering Delhi's water supply. He warned that had the contaminated water mixed with the river, the situation could have turned into a genocide. "If the toxins had merged with the river water, even the water treatment plants could not have treated it," Kejriwal said, expressing gratitude to DJB officials for averting a major disaster.

AAP's Doubled Down Accusations: “Water Terrorism”

A day after the initial allegations, Delhi Chief Minister Atishi reiterated the charges, calling it an act of "water terrorism" and claiming that the water in Yamuna was no longer treatable due to dangerously high levels of ammonia—six times higher than normal. She said that such water could pose serious health risks to Delhi's citizens if supplied without treatment, demanding that the Election Commission intervene.

Atishi stressed the toxicity of the water, which she argued could not be safely treated, thus putting the lives of Delhi residents in danger. "These levels are extremely toxic for the human body," she stated, reiterating the dangers of allowing such water to enter the capital's supply.

DJB Refutes Claims: Allegations Baseless

In response, the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) quickly refuted Kejriwal’s allegations, calling them "factually incorrect" and misleading. DJB CEO Shilpa Shinde addressed the Delhi Chief Secretary, stating that the allegations about Haryana poisoning the water were unfounded and lacked any factual basis. She emphasized that there was no truth to the claims made by AAP leaders.

Haryana BJP Hits Back: Kejriwal’s Mental Imbalance

The allegations have been strongly denied by the BJP, with Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini accusing Kejriwal and the AAP of playing the blame game. Saini challenged the Delhi government to send its chief secretary to conduct a proper inspection, offering to have his own team assess the water quality.

Saini dismissed the ammonia concerns, claiming that the water situation was under control and that there was no shortage of water. He also demanded an apology from Kejriwal, warning that if the allegations were not retracted, he would file a defamation case against the Delhi Chief Minister.

Meanwhile, BJP leader Vijender Gupta, a Delhi MLA, accused Kejriwal of "promoting anarchy" and attempting to mislead the public due to his fear of electoral defeat. Gupta claimed that Kejriwal's allegations were baseless and demonstrated "mental imbalance" on his part.

The Political Fallout

This latest controversy highlights the intensifying political climate in Delhi as elections loom. The allegations of water poisoning have quickly spiraled into a bitter war of words between the AAP and BJP, with both parties accusing each other of misleading the public and engaging in dirty politics. The issue has stirred a debate on the quality of water, political accountability, and the use of public health concerns in election rhetoric.

As the matter remains unresolved, it is likely to play a prominent role in the ongoing electoral campaigns. With the AAP focusing on governance issues and the BJP taking a combative stance, this dispute seems set to further heighten political tensions in the lead-up to the crucial Delhi assembly elections.
