Delhi Judge Shifted After Viral Courtroom Clash With Lawyer; Judicial Officers’ Body Condemns Secret Recording

The Delhi High Court has attached a Rohini Court judge to the Delhi Judicial Academy after a video showing a heated verbal exchange between the judicial officer and a lawyer went viral on social media, triggering controversy within the legal fraternity and prompting protests by bar associations across Delhi.

The judicial officer at the centre of the controversy is District Judge-04, North-West District, Rohini Courts, Shri Rakesh Kumar-V. According to an official order issued by the Registrar General of the Delhi High Court, the decision to attach the judge to the Delhi Judicial Academy in a “diverted capacity” was taken by the Chief Justice and judges of the High Court. The order came shortly after clips of the courtroom confrontation circulated widely online.

The viral video allegedly captured a tense exchange between the judge and a lawyer, who was reported to be the President of the Rohini Court Bar Association. Reports indicate that the dispute arose during court proceedings after the judge reportedly refused a request for a “passover” in a matter listed before him. The altercation soon escalated into a sharp verbal confrontation inside the courtroom.

According to multiple reports, the video contains remarks allegedly made by the judge during the exchange, including statements referring to the lawyer’s alleged connections with High Court judges. The circulation of the footage on social media sparked strong reactions from sections of the Bar, with several district court bar associations demanding action against the judicial officer.

Following the incident, the Coordination Committee of All District Court Bar Associations, Delhi reportedly passed a resolution demanding the judge’s immediate transfer, withdrawal of judicial work and initiation of an inquiry into his conduct. The bar bodies also announced abstention from judicial work as a mark of protest.

Amid the growing controversy, the Delhi Judicial Service Association (DJSA) came out strongly in support of the judicial officer and condemned the alleged illegal recording and circulation of courtroom proceedings. In an official statement, the Association described the recording as a “direct assault” on the dignity and independence of the judiciary.

The DJSA stated that clandestine recording of court proceedings by advocates or litigants without judicial permission undermines the sanctity of courtrooms and threatens judicial independence. The Association expressed “strongest condemnation and profound anguish” over the incident and sought immediate deletion of the viral video clips from all social media platforms.

The Association further asserted that judicial officers across Delhi continue to discharge their duties with integrity, independence and courage despite increasing institutional pressure. It warned that unauthorised recording and selective circulation of courtroom exchanges could intimidate judges and adversely affect free and fearless adjudication.

Legal circles in Delhi have since witnessed a wider debate regarding courtroom discipline, behaviour of advocates and judges, and the legality of secretly recording judicial proceedings. Senior members of the Bar and former judicial officers have pointed out that court proceedings cannot ordinarily be audio or video recorded without permission of the court, especially inside trial courts where sensitive criminal and civil matters are heard daily.

The controversy has also renewed discussions on the growing influence of social media in judicial spaces. Legal experts have noted that while accountability and transparency are important, viral circulation of selective clips without context can distort public perception regarding courtroom events and compromise institutional dignity.

At the same time, some lawyers’ bodies have argued that judicial conduct inside courtrooms must remain subject to scrutiny and that advocates should not face intimidation while representing clients. The incident has therefore triggered competing narratives between concerns over judicial independence and demands for accountability in courtroom behaviour.

Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court’s administrative decision to shift the judicial officer to the Delhi Judicial Academy is being viewed as an interim institutional measure aimed at easing tensions while preserving judicial decorum. No formal disciplinary findings against the judge have been publicly announced so far.

The incident has become one of the most discussed judicial controversies in Delhi in recent months, highlighting the increasingly sensitive relationship between sections of the Bar and Bench, particularly in crowded district court complexes where courtroom tensions often escalate rapidly.

वहीं बढ़ते विवाद के बीच दिल्ली ज्यूडिशियल सर्विस एसोसिएशन (DJSA) न्यायिक अधिकारी के समर्थन में सामने आया और कोर्ट कार्यवाही की कथित अवैध रिकॉर्डिंग एवं प्रसार की कड़ी निंदा की। एसोसिएशन ने अपने आधिकारिक बयान में इसे न्यायपालिका की गरिमा और स्वतंत्रता पर “सीधा हमला” बताया।

DJSA ने कहा कि न्यायालय की अनुमति के बिना अधिवक्ताओं या अन्य व्यक्तियों द्वारा कोर्ट कार्यवाही की गुप्त रिकॉर्डिंग करना अदालत की पवित्रता और न्यायिक स्वतंत्रता को कमजोर करता है। एसोसिएशन ने इस घटना पर “गहरी पीड़ा और कड़ी निंदा” व्यक्त करते हुए वायरल वीडियो को सभी सोशल मीडिया प्लेटफॉर्म्स से तत्काल हटाने की मांग की।

एसोसिएशन ने आगे कहा कि दिल्ली के न्यायिक अधिकारी कठिन परिस्थितियों और बढ़ते संस्थागत दबाव के बावजूद स्वतंत्रता और निष्पक्षता के साथ अपने कर्तव्यों का निर्वहन कर रहे हैं। उसने चेतावनी दी कि कोर्टरूम की बातचीत को गुप्त रूप से रिकॉर्ड कर चुनिंदा हिस्सों को वायरल करना न्यायाधीशों को डराने-धमकाने का माध्यम बन सकता है और इससे निष्पक्ष न्यायिक कार्य प्रभावित हो सकता है।

इस घटना के बाद दिल्ली के कानूनी हलकों में कोर्टरूम अनुशासन, न्यायाधीशों और वकीलों के व्यवहार तथा न्यायालय कार्यवाही की रिकॉर्डिंग की वैधता पर व्यापक बहस शुरू हो गई है। वरिष्ठ अधिवक्ताओं और पूर्व न्यायिक अधिकारियों ने कहा है कि विशेषकर ट्रायल कोर्ट्स में बिना अनुमति ऑडियो या वीडियो रिकॉर्डिंग सामान्यतः स्वीकार्य नहीं है।
