Share:

The President of India has approved the conferment of the Padma Vibhushan award to former Chief Justice of India JS Khehar. Justice Khehar served as the 44th Chief Justice of India from 4 January 2017 to 27 August 2017. Prior to this, he was a Judge of the Supreme Court from September 2011 to August 2017.

Justice Khehar was a key figure in several landmark verdicts, including the NJAC case, the right to privacy judgment, the triple talaq case (where he dissented), and the Nabam Rebia case, which restored the Congress Government in Arunachal Pradesh.

In addition, Senior Advocate CS Vaidyanathan has been conferred with the Padma Shri award. Both Justice Khehar and CS Vaidyanathan have been selected for the Padma awards under the "Public Affairs" category.

About the Padma Awards

The Padma Awards are among the highest civilian awards in India. They are conferred in three categories:

  • Padma Vibhushan – for exceptional and distinguished service
  • Padma Bhushan – for distinguished service of high order
  • Padma Shri – for distinguished service in any field

The awards are presented in various fields such as art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, and civil service, among others.

The Padma Awards are announced annually on Republic Day.
